tips and tricks

Industrial Straight Line Finish on Stainless Steel

You can achieve the same industrial straight line finish (#4 appliance, #6 satin or brush) on stainless steel using two different procedures.

Procedure #1

Use the PTX Eco Smart 47002 with the Hollow Core Shaft Adapter 42004 to achieve an industrial #4 appliance, #6 satin or brushed straight line finish on stainless steel.

#4 Appliance Finish

  • Pre-grinding: Use the PTX Flap Wheel 47212 (60 grit), 47213 (80 grit) to create the desired straight line scratch pattern.

#6 Satin or Brushed Metal Finish

  • Pre-grinding: Use the PTX Flap Wheel 47213 (80 grit) or 47214 (120 grit) to create the desired straight line scratch pattern.

Procedure #2

Use the PTX Eco Smart 47002 with the Hollow Core Shaft Adapter 42004 and PTX Expansion Roller to achieve an industrial straight line finish.

#4 Appliance Finish

  • Final Grinding/Industrial Finish: Use the PTX Fleece "Nonwoven" Sleeve 42011 (medium grit). This produces a straight line finish corresponding to a #4 finish with a grain standard of 150‐180 grit.

#6 Satin or Brushed Finish

  • Final Grinding/Industrial Finish: Use the PTX Fleece "Nonwoven" Sleeve 42012 (fine grit). This produces a straight line finish corresponding to a #6 finish with a grain standard of 220-240 grit.

Application Tips

  • Using an oscillating back and forth operation creates a uniform straight line scratch pattern. Long motions prevent stop/start marks.
  • By varying the speed of the tool, it is possible to make fine adjustments to the finish. For example: lower speed results in deeper scratch pattern and faster speed results in higher reflectivity.
